Ugh, Flowers

Despite the fact that I've barrelled through most of my to-do list there is one thing that I am procrastinating on because I really hate it... the florist.

Let me be honest here for a moment. It's not just that I have severe allergies to most flowers. I just don't get flowers. I don't understand why it ever became tradition or custom to give and receive and expect flowers. I have this image in my head of some caveman, failing to obtain an appropriate meal for the evening, picks up a bunch of weeds and offers it to his cavewoman as a distraction. And then what cavewoman would forgive such a deed just because there's something pretty in her face? I understand that flowers are pretty - but pretty for pretty's sake is of no interest to me.

I contemplated not even having any flowers at the wedding, except that if all eyes are going to be on me and the bridesmaids, we better well be holding onto something for dear life.

I have still not ruled out waking up on our wedding day, going to the corner bodega, and picking up a few bunches of whatever is there, tying them up with some ribbon.

The point is, I still don't have a florist.

If you hate flowers that much - why have a florist?? Seriously! there are other options of what to carry! Not to add to your DIY plate... but I think these are a great idea too! http://www.marthastewartcrafts.com/index.php?v=msc_proj_yellowcrepepaperroses-ht

If you do end up going with flowers, here's another option... when my roommate (who you know!) got married 2 summers ago... she bought all her flowers wholesale from the flower district in NYC the day before her wedding and DIY'd the bouquets & centerpieces and kept them in her hotel room overnight... so she'd be happy to give you her contact.

i know, i'm such a hypocrite sometimes. i thought about other alternatives like silk flowers, but to be honest, i don't like how they looked in pictures. they just looked fake and cheap. thanks for that link on crepe roses, i'll try one and take a pic and see if that's any better.

the reason i am looking for a florist is because while i haven't ruled out diy flowers, i think i'll be too stressed out in the days leading up to the wedding that i'll need to delegate.

Have you seen these? http://snipurl.com/2wfrj

These are custom clay flowers that are amazingly beautiful, and about the same price as a regular bouquet, plus you can keep them forever. It probably wouldn't be economical to have them at every table, but what about for your and your bridesmaids? Seriously, if I didn't have to worry about breaking it on the plane, I would so have done this.

@words - those are really pretty. the thing is, i don't really want to keep them forever. like i said, pretty for pretty's sake doesn't really mean much to me. i kind of want something i can have to look alright and i can throw away when it's done... i actually thought about making beaded bouquets, but then i realized it was too much work for something i didn't want to keep around after.

dude, i suck.

hrm... people give bouquets to their mothers/grandmothers etc sometimes during the reception as a way of honoring them. you could do that! it would be a nice keepsake, you know how Filipinos love that!
