Napkin rings.
They're so useless! Every time I see one I roll my eyes because once I sit down I take the napkin out of the ring... and then what?! Seriously, why are napkin rings even in existence? "Because they're pretty" is not sufficient. Has society really reached a point where accessories for our napkins are must-have registry items?

I love this post... so simple but so true. There are so many useless items out there!
Ah ha! I have the practical explanation for napkin rings for you, thanks to my great grandmother. Napkin rings are so you can use cloth napkins for a few days in a row, with a big family, and still know whose napkin is whose.* The key is to have mismatched napkin rings to do the job.
In our slightly old fashioned all cloth napkin family, this is key. Sadly, I haven't really found a good selection of tasteful affordable ones. Humph. They are, indeed, out of fashion.
*If someone else is a napkin musser, you shouldn't have to use that napkin. Or keep doing the laundry between meals.
@broke-ass bride - i find them particularly useless because i always find myself thinking, can't you just fold the napkins?
@meg - aha! thanks for the explanation! that actually makes a lot of sense. i still won't register for them, but now they won't make me quite as angry (and i'll have an anecdote)!
Along those lines tell me the point of a charger? I'd never seen one til I was much much older and I don't get why your plate needs a plate.
Ok, the charger. That sh*t has to go. That's where I draw the line.
what's a charger? (not snarky, for real. i don't know what it is.)
A charger is basically a decorative plate that goes under the dinner plate. Mostly non-functional except for decoration and maybe an extra edge to keep food stuffs off the table.
What I don't know if there are any chargers that keep food warm.
